Axisymmetric magneto-plastic evolution of neutron-star crusts

چکیده

Magnetic field evolution in neutron-star crusts is driven by the Hall effect and Ohmic dissipation, for as long crust sufficiently strong to absorb Maxwell stresses exerted thus make momentum equation redundant. For strongest fields, however, build point of crustal failure, at which standard equations are no longer valid. Here, we study magnetic up beyond whence begins flow plastically. We perform global axisymmetric evolutions, exploring different types failure affecting a limited region crust. find that plastic does not simply suppress even regime low viscosity, but it rather leads non-trivial -- some cases overreacting enhancing impact effect. Its more pronouced toroidal field, with differences on poloidal being less substantial. argue both nature magnetar bursts their spindown will be affected flow, so observations these phenomena may help constrain way fails.

Physics of Neutron Star Crusts

The physics of neutron star crusts is vast, involving many different research fields, from nuclear and condensed matter physics to general relativity. This review summarizes the progress, which has been achieved over the last few years, in modeling neutron star crusts, both at the microscopic and macroscopic levels. The confrontation of these theoretical models with observations is also briefly...

Neutron-phonon Interaction in Neutron Star Crusts

The phonon spectrum of Coulomb lattice in neutron star crusts above the neutron drip density is affected by the interaction with the ambient neutron Fermi-liquid. For the values of the neutron-phonon coupling constant in the range 0.1 ≤ λ ≤ 1 an appreciable renormalization of the phonon spectrum occurs which can lead to a lattice instability manifested in an exponential growth of the density fl...

Towards a metallurgy of neutron star crusts.

In the standard picture of the crust of a neutron star, matter there is simple: a body-centered-cubic lattice of nuclei immersed in an essentially uniform electron gas. We show that, at densities above that for neutron drip (∼ 4 × 1 0(11)  g cm(-3) or roughly one-thousandth of nuclear matter density), the interstitial neutrons give rise to an attractive interaction between nuclei that renders t...

Compositional Freeze-Out of Neutron Star Crusts

We have investigated the crustal properties of neutron stars without fallback accretion. We have calculated the chemical evolution of the neutron star crust in three different cases (a modified Urca process without the thermal influence of a crust, a thick crust, and a direct Urca process with a thin crust) in order to determine the detailed composition of the envelope and atmosphere as the nuc...

Resonant shattering of neutron star crusts.

The resonant excitation of neutron star (NS) modes by tides is investigated as a source of short gamma-ray burst (SGRB) precursors. We find that the driving of a crust-core interface mode can lead to shattering of the NS crust, liberating ∼10{46}-10{47}  erg of energy seconds before the merger of a NS-NS or NS-black-hole binary. Such properties are consistent with Swift/BAT detections of SGRB p...
